Product Engineer
Build with AI. Own the outcome.
London (Hybrid) · Full-time · £40,000–£60,000 depending on experience
ClearWatt helps people understand electric vehicles and make confident decisions about them. We build battery health testing, diagnostics and digital products for EV owners, car dealers and enterprise partners.
We’re looking for a Product Engineer who combines strong product instincts with a practical command of AI coding tools. Someone who can take a customer problem, work out what matters, and turn it into useful software.
About the role
AI should be central to how you build. You already use it to explore unfamiliar code, develop features, test ideas and solve problems. You know how to give it the right context, break down complex work, review its output and keep development moving when the first approach fails.
You’ll work across our customer platform, dealer tools, integrations and internal systems, collaborating closely with product, design and our technical lead. You’ll help shape solutions, build them, get them into users’ hands and improve them based on what you learn.
We care about your ability to make something useful work in the real world. We want to see what you’ve built, how you built it and the decisions you made along the way.
What you’ll do
- Turn problems into products. Understand the user, challenge assumptions and identify the smallest useful solution.
- Build features from start to finish. Work across interfaces, application logic, APIs and data, taking features from initial idea through deployment and iteration.
- Make AI a force multiplier. Use coding agents and other AI tools throughout development, giving them clear instructions, relevant context and effective ways to check their work.
- Prototype and learn quickly. Make ideas tangible, gather feedback and judge when to refine, change direction or stop.
- Take responsibility for what ships. Review generated code, investigate failures and check that features work reliably with real users and real data.
- Improve how the team builds. Share useful workflows, automate repetitive work and help colleagues get more value from AI.
- Follow through after launch. Use customer feedback and product data to understand whether your work solved the problem.
What we’re looking for
- Evidence that you build with AI. You can walk us through real projects where AI materially changed what you could deliver or how quickly you delivered it.
- Good product judgment. You ask useful questions, spot unnecessary complexity and make sensible trade-offs between user value, effort and quality.
- Enough engineering depth to own the result. You can understand, debug and improve the software you ship, including code generated by AI.
- An instinct for usable software. You notice confusing journeys, missing feedback and awkward interactions, and work with design to improve them.
- Comfort with ambiguity. You can make progress from a problem and some context, without needing every detail specified in advance.
- Clear communication. You explain decisions, flag uncertainty early and work well with technical and non-technical colleagues.
Experience with TypeScript, React, Next.js, Python, PostgreSQL or cloud platforms would be useful. We value your ability to learn and deliver more than familiarity with every part of our stack.
You don’t need an EV background or a particular degree. Relevant work can come from employment, freelancing, a startup or substantial personal projects.
Why ClearWatt?
You’ll work in a small team with direct access to customers and decision-makers. You’ll have a visible influence on what we build and how we build it, with room to take on broader ownership as you develop.
If you enjoy understanding a problem, building a solution and seeing someone use it, we’d like to hear from you.
When applying, tell us about something you’ve built with AI. A link, screenshots or a short walkthrough are welcome; a confidential project described clearly is equally useful.
